Facebook tracks all site vistors, violating EU law, report says

Facebook tracks everyone who visits its site, including people who don’t have an account, and even continues to track users and non-users who have opted out of targeted ads, researchers at two Belgian universities have found.

Researchers at the University of Leuven in cooperation with researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel have published an update to a February analysis of Facebook’s new policies and terms. The report, commissioned by the Belgian Privacy Commission, already found in preliminary conclusions in February that Facebook, with its 2015 privacy policy update, likely acts in violation of European law.

Apple Now Lets You Trade Your Android Phone For Credit Towards An iPhone

Earlier this month, there was a rumor that Apple was going to extend its trade-in program to include non-Apple devices. Now it is official. Apple will let you trade in Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone smartphones in exchange for credit towards an iPhone in the U.S., UK, Canada, Germany, France and Italy, according to Apple’s retail store website. The trade-in program is limited to several smartphone models made by Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony, BlackBerry and Nokia. The credit value of your trade-in device depends on the age and condition. You can also trade in your PC for credit towards a new Mac. The timing of happens to coincide with the launch of Samsung’s new flagship smartphones. Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge around the world on April 10th. This means Apple may be able to convince consumers to upgrade to an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus from their Samsung Galaxy S5 instead of a Samsung Galaxy S6. The Reuse and Recycling program is accessible online and at Apple’s retail stores.

When Censorship Backfires: How Blue Coat Silenced A Security Researcher

FORBES obtains emails showing how and when Blue Coat went about preventing a researcher from presenting his investigations into the security of the company's technology. The silencing of Raphaël Rigo is just one chapter in a long and troubled history of private and public censorship of researchers. The implications aren't limited to the security industry, but are relevant to anyone who uses technology today.

Surveillance And The Encryption Boogeyman

In January of this year, British Prime Minister David Cameron let it be known that he intended to dumb down encryption so that law enforcement could monitor all of the information streaming across the country. A direct attempt to capitalize on the Paris attacks. This was an unfortunate overture against encryption and privacy in general. Sure, he is stumping for votes with his electoral base but, this is by no means the first or the last time this sort of rhetoric has popped up.

Germanwings Crash Raises Questions For Pilots Taking Depression Drugs

The crash of Germanwings Flight 4U9525 in the French Alps, killing 150 people, has raised critical questions about the mental and physical fitness of commercial pilots, disease treatments, and the rules for medically disqualifying a pilot from active service. This broad, perennial issue is now focused on whether a pilot with a diagnosis of depression should be permitted to fly, even if taking antidepressant drugs.

Why "This Time It's Different "

Change isn't anew phenomenon, in fact the only thing we can be certain of in this world is that change is going to happen all the time. So then why are the discussions around the future of work taking center stage at so many organizations, conferences, media publications, etc around the world? Aren't we just going through another cycle of the same old? Absolutely not. It's true that change is a constant we should all be used to but the type of changes we are seeing in the world are unlike anything we have experienced in the past for three reasons: 1) the world is now connected 2) the pace of change has never been greater and 3) every industry and every company in every geography is being disrupted. Look at how Uber is disrupting transportation and logistics, Square’s disruption of payments, Fitbit’s impact on medical devices, the freelancer and sharing economies impact on traditional models and forms of employment. New marketplaces, platforms and technologies are disrupting pretty much every industry you can think of. As the saying goes, “Either you disrupt or get disrupted,” and this is what we’re starting to see. In the latest episode of the #futurein5 I talk about this in more detail and help explain "why this time it's different."

About 25 US states oppose sale of RadioShack's customer data

Several state consumer protection agencies in the U.S. have joined the state of Texas in objecting in bankruptcy court to the proposed sale by RadioShack of personal information of its customers.

In a filing Wednesday, the state of Texas said it had received support from 21 governmental consumer protection entities to its objection last week to the planned sale of personally identifiable information (PII) of 117 million RadioShack customers.

The state of Texas had earlier objected to the sale citing both the in-store and online privacy policies of the consumer electronics retailer. “All versions of the privacy policy contain an unequivocal provision that consumer PII will not be sold,” state officials said in a filing to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Yad Vashem: Israel's Virtual Historical Healing Space

About a year ago, I got the opportunity to bring 25-plus leaders in business to Singularity University (where currently I am an advisor) to get a peek into the future of consumer experience. SU, as its more informally known, has the mission of engaging, educating, and empowering leaders not just in business but in government, education, and the NGO world. It likes to showcase innovation in these sectors to illustrate where things inevitably will go, on the premise – with a nod to the “speculative fiction” writer William Gibson – that the future is already here, but not evenly distributed. For the folks I invited to SU that day, one of the most compelling, futuristic concepts on display was the Holoroom, a project developed by Lowes – the home furnishings retailer – that combines the use of physical space and augmented reality to enable shoppers to imagine, for instance, the kitchen of their dreams. What most struck visitors to SU that day was the simplicity of this hack. Lowes is looking to evolve the quality and value of a known type of consumer experience – visiting a store – not by inventing new technologies but by applying existing technologies, and design concepts, in a novel way.

At stake is the Safe Harbor Framework allowing U.S. companies to self-certify that they meet tough EU rules on the processing of personal information.

A decision to revoke the deal could have serious consequences for U.S. companies that process EU citizens’ data in the U.S. Earlier this month, Twitter warned that a revocation of the deal could seriously hurt its business.

Are You Ready for Do It Yourself Mobile Apps?

We’ve gotten to a point at which the power of mobile devices, pervasive high quality wireless networks, and the power of automated software development have created a huge opportunity for a kind of app that we all want but that has been missing. These are apps that are as easy to make as a presentation but can be deployed on the mobile devices that we all carry around. The kind of self-service experience I’m talking about is being created by companies like doForms, and a few others, who are bringing self-service creation of mobile apps to a far wider audience. By using these technologies, you can explore the scope of what mobility can do for you, how it can changes business processes, and be agile.

Water Access Improvements Will Improve Global Productivity

The Water For Women report released today written by a private-public partnership for the United Nations World Water Day highlights how very much global productivity can rise if the access of the poorer half the world’s population to water improves. Imagine the productivity of Christine Lagarde, Melinda Gates, Indra Nooyi and other great women if part of their daily work was walking 3.7 miles to get water for their families (the average in Asia and Africa), hand-washing their family’s clothes and dishes as part of their daily responsibility and being ill frequently because the water used for cleaning wasn’t always as clean as hoped. These are hours per day of productivity we take for granted in developed economies.

What Will Happen When 'The Walking Dead' Meets 'Payday'?

Last week I wrote a piece detailing how I believe The Walking Dead needs a bigger, better video game presence, given the series' reach in print and on TV. While Telltale’s TWD story games are fantastic in their own right, I don’t think the existence of outrageously terrible The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct means that the series should abandon the shooter genre altogether.

Obama administration's encryption concerns meant to start a debate

U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration still believes in the use of encryption to protect digital information, even after top officials have questioned how law enforcement agencies will get access to data on encrypted devices, a White House advisor said.

There is “no scenario” in which the U.S. government wants weaker encryption, Michael Daniel, the White House’s cybersecurity coordinator, said Thursday.

But Obama and other officials have raised questions about how to deal with technology that puts information “literally beyond the reach of law enforcement under any sort of due process,” Daniel said during a discussion about encryption and law enforcement at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Midsize Daily Fantasy Sports Website Seeks To Prove Its Contests Are Games Of Skill, Not Chance

In order for a "daily fantasy sports" contest to be legal under federal and state laws, the underlying contest must be deemed a "game of skill" rather than a "game of chance." However, one of the midsize "daily fantasy sports" websites, Star Fantasy Leagues, claims to be very close to doing just that.

Samsung Galaxy S6: Questions That Need Answered Before Considering

I attended the Samsung Electronics product launch event in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress (MWC). It was a huge launch, intended to win the global audience over with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Samsung had a lot riding on a successful launch as they have lost significant market share to the Apple iPhone and want to get it back. All in all, the event was good, but generated a lot of questions for me that Samsung wasn't ready to answer yet. I want to go over those questions.

MWC: Stop The Eight Core Mobile Chip Marketing Madness

I spent this week in Barcelona attending Mobile World Congress. Vendors from across the globe came to MWC to market their mobile ideas, opinions, hardware, software and services. I paid particular attention to handset makers and mobile SoC developers. I saw some very positive things from both these groups, but I saw one very disappointing thing that is on the brink of being disingenuous, and that relates to marketing of 8 CPU-core SoCs and handsets. I want to be crystal clear: there’s nothing wrong with having an 8-CPU core SoC versus one with 5, 4, or even 3 CPU cores. What is wrong is marketing 8 mobile CPU cores aggressively as a major differentiator or something that makes an experiential difference.

MWC: Intel Helping Service Providers To Optimize End-To-End IoT Value Chains

IT is in the crosshairs of a major data center architecture transition driven by a phenomenal rise in factors including Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and real-time analytics, finding a deeper relevance in the current business landscape. Over the last year, Intel developed the concept of software-defined infrastructure (SDI) as the next step in datacenter transformation. One of the main aims of Intel’s SDI is to do away with the problems of rigid and proprietary systems, which means that an easy switch from different service providers for all your datacenter pieces is now possible. To this end, the concept behind SDI is to extend the definition of the software-defined datacenter (SDDC), and create a kind of “IT nirvana” if you will, where storage and networking pieces can quickly, easily, and cost effectively be brought together. While we may not be there just yet, this is a very good start. Intel introduced SDI primarily to make IT more flexible, agile, and cost-effective, but there may be other ways to utilize its capabilities as well. One of the ways SDI could have a tremendous impact, is by optimizing the IoT value chain. Think of the IoT value chain as a collection of products and solution providers, right at the core of a device (such as a processor or OS) to the cloud, including all of the data analytics and application software that comes in between. Data analytics driven by the Internet of Things value chain could be an effective use case for cloud data centers looking to implement SDDC practices that encompass both SDI and SDN (software defined networking). I’ll talk about this aspect of SDI briefly in this article, but if you want more information on the topic, you can read more here.

The Cloud Revolution: 3 Things IT Can Learn From Its Own History

Tech has always been a liberating force that compels us to look at the world differently. IBM changed IT forever -- its PCs enabled analysis in business processes that resulted in better operating efficiency and faster innovation, significantly improving customer experiences. Now, cloud technologies are replaying the same whirlwind-liberation that PCs once did. Here's how...

Booker Raises $35 Million To Bring Small Business Scheduling Online

You're looking for a local spa for a treatment, so you turn to the digital equivalent of the yellow pages, Google and Yelp. In seconds, you're scanning a range of choices for high reviews, convenience and price. You pick a winner. But there's a problem. It's after dinner and the only way to make an appointment is through a phone number, now going straight to voicemail. It'll be hours before you can find out availability; possibly days before you'll set foot inside the spa.

2015 Bentley Flying Spur V8: Nothing "Entry" about this Bentley

Despite the increasing capabilities, and pricing, of mainstream luxury brands there remains a zone of ultra luxury inhabited by few automotive nameplates. Bentley is one of them, with an image steeped in fine craftsmanship, capable performance and smooth driving. The 2015 Bentley Flying Spur maintains Bentley’s image, even in “base” form when equipped with a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine making 500 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. With a starting price of $197,825 (including $2,725 destination charge) the Flying Spur with a V8 costs about $20,000 less than a Flying Spur with the more traditional 6.0-liter W12 engine found in most 21st century Bentleys, making it the "cheapest" Bentley you can buy new. But that $20K is an amount the target demographic loses between clubhouse couch cushions every month, so why bother?

How Apple Will Weaken The Samsung Galaxy S6

As the world's press departed for Barcelona and MWC, Apple invited them to its presentation on March 9th. Widely expected to be for the Apple Watch, not only does it keep the release of information under Apple's control but it also weakens the PR around devices announced at MWC.

NSA authorization to collect bulk phone data extended to June 1

A U.S. secret court has extended until June 1 the controversial bulk collection of private phone records of Americans by the National Security Agency.

The government said it had asked for reauthorization of the program as reform legislation, called the USA Freedom Act, was stalled in Congress. The bill would require telecommunications companies rather than the NSA to hold the bulk data, besides placing restrictions on the search terms used to retrieve the records.

An added urgency for Congress to act comes from the upcoming expiry on June 1 of the relevant part of the Patriot Act that provides the legal framework for the bulk data collections. Under a so-called “sunset” clause, the provision will lapse unless it is reauthorized in some form or the other by legislation.

Be Human, Be Honest, Be Real: A New Era in Content

I am a big fast-forwarder. I almost never watch commercials. In fact I am not the only one. 84 percent of millenials don't trust traditional advertising at all. But lately I admit I've been breaking my own "watch no commercial" rule. Did you see the #LikeAGirl piece at this year's Super Bowl? The commercial asks "When did 'like a girl' become an insult?" This video produced by Always has 56 million views. This is not a commercial for Always products. This is much more than that. #LikeAGirl is a powerful critique on the way we put girls down with every day language. "Like a girl" shouldn't have a negative connotation but it does. The brand Always wants to change that. I would buy their products just because I think this message is absolutely important. I can imagine women all over the country are voting with their wallet as well.

A Fashion Expert Shares Her Thoughts on Apple Watch and Wearables

With the anticipated Apple Watch launch announcement on March 9th, I sought a fashion-insider's perspective on wearable devices and the Apple Watch in particular. With an eye to style, aesthetics and fashion, I spoke with Christine Campbell, President of Crimson Mim, an independent women's boutique located in the heart of Silicon Valley. I have known Christine for a few years and serve on the advisory board of Crimson Mim. In general, fashion industry insiders are not happy with how the Apple Watch looks. Since, Apple is trying to sell Apple Watch as a jewelry item, I thought it would be insightful to talk to someone from the fashion industry.
