Efficient Responsive Design Process

What's your responsive design process like? Do you feel that it's efficient? The following article is an excerpt from Ben Callahans chapter Responsive Process, first published in the Smashing Book 5 (table of contents). We've collected some useful techniques and practices from real-life responsive projects in the book and you can get your hard copy or grab the eBook today. You will not be disappointed, you know. Responsive Process

The successful respondent to this RFP will provide three static design options for our team to evaluate. Ive never been a huge fan of taking a multi-option design approach, but I get it sometimes a client needs this. Each of these options will provide design for three unique layouts: home page, listing page, detail page. All right. Now, were up to nine static design files. This is getting a bit out of hand.

How shapeshifting nanoparticles could deliver drugs to tumours

Chemotherapy is still widely used to treatcancer-- but it's far from perfect. The treatment can't tell the difference between healthy cells and cancerous ones, meaning that both are attacked. This subsequently leads to side effects such as sickness, weakness and hair loss. Now, a team at the University of Toronto has developed a "moleculardelivery system" which allows chemotherapy drugs to target unhealthy cells, minimising damage done to healthy cells.

Web Development Reading List #125: The Fallacy Of Urgency And Building A Modern Theme Switcher

It's Friday again, and I found some interesting articles for you to read over the upcoming weekend. In projects, developer, manager and product leaders still try to put pressure on the people who work on a task. Somehow they feel relieved, more secure if they do that. On the other hand, the people experiencing the pressure of urgency are struggling massively with it.

Responsive containers in Gmail

The fallacy here is that while the ones spreading the pressure feel better, the people experiencing it usually do a worse job than without the pressure. It leads to more bugs, unstructured work and, in the end, all people involved will suffer from the result. So instead, a team, which includes everyone from a developer to a manager, should focus on the purpose of the work. Give it a try, y'all, and now, enjoy your weekend!

Creating Content Wireframes For Responsive Design

As I was leading my course in responsive web design between 2011 and 2012, I kept stumbling over the process of wireframing. My students tended to focus on the wireframe as being the end game in the planning process. They didn't understand that responsive design focuses on how users will access the content.

How To Create Content Wireframes For Responsive Design

You can only imagine my relief when I happened to come across a video by Stephen Hay speaking at the Beyond the Desktop conference in 2012. There, in his talk on responsive design, he presented the concept of the content wireframe. This was a huge relief to me. I just knew there was a step before the process got real, but I couldn't articulate it. In this post, I'll describe the methods I use to get from content to responsive wireframe -- and how you can, too.
