Game of Thrones inspires British baby names

Televisual history tells us that being born a character -- any character -- in the Game of Thrones universe is likely to result in misery, distress, pain and probably untimely death. This has not deterred scores of British parents from naming their offspring after their favourite characters, however.

The character which has most frequently inspired parents over the past year is Arya Stark, the feisty teenager who is a favourite of many fans of the show. There were 244 babies named Arya in 2014, and six that were named after Arya's sister Sansa. Emilia Clarke's character in the show has also proved influential, with 53 babies named Khaleesi and another nine named Daenerys last year. Before 2010, neither name had been used in the UK before. For the first time ever this year, four babies have been named Brienne.
