Car dongles let you hack the brakes

Internet-enabled gadgets present an easy way for hackers to infiltrate cars, a study has shown.

The University of California at San Diego team behind the find has been hacking cars for years, but refers to solutions for those vulnerabilities as "relatively straightforward". Those hacks related to vehicle control units -- fully integrated features of the cars. It meant that the research team could flag up vulnerabilities to manufacturers, which could then in turn update the systems accordingly. With dongles that are bought and plugged into the car by the public, the potential risk is far greater because this sector is not as strictly regulated and there are so many different products on the market.
