Newly posted audio files depict the horror of 9/11 unfolding in the sky as air traffic controllers struggled to follow the faint tracks of hijacked planes, fighter jets tried in vain to chase them down and a flight attendant made a desperate appeal for help at http://www.google.com/m/news?topic=n&hl=en

The sound files add a layer of emotion to previously published transcripts, as puzzlement and frustration seeps into the voices of controllers, military commanders and even pilots watching the attacks from the sky.

Spring Lake!

SPRING LAKE — Parts of Spring Lake’s boardwalk were damaged during the storm surge produced by Hurricane Irene last night and this morning. The surge also flooded Wreck Pond, which spilled into Shore Road in Spring Lake Heights and reached the homes of residents.

Spring Lake mayor Jennifer Naughton said the good news is the town had no reports of injuries or deaths caused by Irene.

“Most of our residents took the warnings and left town. We’re grateful of that,”
